I Will Follow Him

“I Will Follow Him” is a popular song that was first recorded in 1961 by Franck Pourcel, as an instrumental entitled “Chariot”. The song achieved its widest success when it was recorded by American singer Little Peggy March with English lyrics on January 7, 1963.

Lyrics to the Song recently sung by Voice overs with Whoopi Goldberg in a Popular Movie.

Here’s an extract of the song:

I will follow Him, follow Him wherever He may go,
And near Him, I always will be,
for nothing can keep me away,
He is my destiny.

I will follow Him, ever since He touched my heart I knew,
There isn’t an ocean too deep,
A mountain so high, it can keep,
Keep me away, away from His love.

I love Him, I love Him, I love Him,
And where He goes, I’ll follow, I’ll follow, I’ll follow.

Allow me to leave you with a few thoughts.

When Jesus called the disciples, he said: “Follow me!” Then, in training, we do not see Jesus teaching them the “doctrines” of the church. We do not see Jesus teaching them how to speak politically and religiously correct. We do not see Jesus showing them how to compromise on the true Gospel (of salvation through Christ) and how to please the hearer. No, Jesus’s ministry and teaching was founded in His power, and His ability to save, heal and deliver. He showed them the way, taught them the truth and led them into a new life. He was a Light that Shined into the Darkness.

Today I am concerned. Yes, we all say or sing: “I will follow Him” but many a sermon is filled with religious rhetoric, with promises of prosperity (often to be bought by giving), with compromising ideas and people pleasing sermons stripped of Jesus Christ, the essence of the Gospel. Many say “I will follow Him” yet we preach submission to this, to that, to the church, the pastor and the constitution and refrain from offending people by confronting them with the true Gospel of Salvation through Jesus Christ.

We see in Matthew 4:19 that when Jesus called Peter and Andrew, they put down their nets straight away and followed Him. Just so, I believe we should put down our nets, our religious beliefs, our target driven ministry (both numerically and financially), our traditional beliefs and follow Him, the One who has called us. Like Ruth said to Naomi we should say to Jesus: “Don’t ask me to leave you! Let me go with you. Wherever you go, I will go; wherever you live, I will live. Your people will be my people, and your God will be my God.” (Ruth 1: 16-17)

I pray, “Jesus, my Jesus, I will follow you, even in times like these. Jesus, I will preach the truth, I will speak of You and how You came to deliver sinners like me by dying on Calvary’s cross. And Jesus, I do love You, and in being obedient to You, I wish my love for You and Your love to the World will be revealed.
